Weed cONTROL
Florida is blessed and abundant with nutrients both from an organic means (soil, bacteria, etc.) and an inorganic means (fertilizers, oil from street run off etc.etc.); nutrients are the primary food source for aquatic plants and algae. They require very little of these elements in order to reproduce and propagate, less than 1 mlg/l will grow them in abundance. If you fill up a bird bath with tap water which is regulated to have a minute level of phosphorus and nitrogen in it for consumption, that bird bath will be pea green in a matter of days. This is an example of algae growing with the support of a very low level of food source provided in order for it to sustain itself. If you have a pond, lake or river, you can magnify the nutrient load millions of times greater and expect the growth of algae and aquatic plants to be prolific. This is the reason you have an abundance of plant and algae growth here in the Southeastern United States. When you add 12-14 hour photo periods for photosynthesis to occur, and water temperatures during the growing season that can rise into the upper 90's, growth of exotic and native algae and plant species is a virtual certainty. There are thousands of known algae species and aquatic plants within the United States and in the Southeast, and any given one can become a health hazzard, harmful to a fishery and adversely effect the ecology and balance of a system. This is where a well trained and experienced aquatic plant manager comes into play in order to keep your fresh water ecosystem in balance.
